Anne’s Daffodils
Greetings from the coast of Maine.
One thing you can say with certainty - in spite of the challenges we currently face, spring will eventually return to Maine. The air will warm up, the grass will turn green ever so slowly, and the trees will start to bud up.
My peonies are just a few inches out of the ground. The forsythia is starting to bloom. The robins have appeared with regularity, searching for breakfast in our dooryard. And last but not least, there's a hint of yellow in the midst of the brush: Anne's daffodils are coming once again – a sure sign of spring.
Anne is a friend of mine who lives in Blue Hill. And she has daffodils. Lots and lots and lots of daffodils. Her house was my secret garden for several years after she bought her home but hadn't moved here yet. I used to stop by in the spring and pick buckets of them.
We all know that this spring is like no other. What, I wondered, could we do with all those daffodils? It didn't take long to decide that if we picked them and arranged them in jars I've saved over the years, we could sell them in the parking lot at The Meadow and donate all the proceeds to benefit the Blue Hill Tree of Life Food Pantry.
According to my garden calendars from years past, Anne's daffodils should be in full bloom by the end of this week, ready for the picking. So, this Saturday, May 16th, from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM, please stop by the parking lot of The Meadow of Blue Hill to select an arrangement and make a donation. We are asking for a minimum of $10.00, but feel free to give more. Exact change, please!
The store will be closed, but we'll be there wearing masks and observing social distancing. And remember, all proceeds will go to the Food Pantry.
If you can't come to the Meadow but would like to make a donation, you can send us a check, payable to The Tree of Life, P.O. Box 456, Blue Hill, ME 04614.
We hope to see you (from a distance) on Friday!
